This Northside Summit home is less than 10 minutes on foot from the center of the city (village green, train station with direct service to Pennsylvania Station) and a block from Lincoln-Hubbard Elementary School. The high school is less than a mile away.

Indoors: The owners bought the house in 2007 from the estate of a woman who lived there from 1938 until her death and was married to the son of the founders of the Reeves-Reed Arboretum, the reputed source of many plantings on the property. Beginning in 2011, the property was thoroughly renovated (plaster walls were repaired, cracked panes of leaded glass were replaced) and a new kitchen was added, along with a mudroom and wraparound porch.

Owned by the screenwriter, memoirist and actor Jerry Stahl (“Bad Boys II,” “Permanent Midnight”), this home is in the Mount Washington neighborhood, about seven miles northeast of downtown. Moon Canyon’s hiking trails and the black walnut woodlands of Heidelberg Park are less than a mile away. Red-tailed hawks can be seen swooping below the deck.

Indoors: The top-down configuration includes wide stairs that descend from the main entrance at the garage level to a floor with an open-plan living, dining and kitchen area on one side and a library on the other. The great room has two walls of windows and a fireplace with a cylindrical metal chimney flanked by wood cabinets.

The kitchen was recently updated with white cabinets, stainless-steel appliances and a butcher block island. The library has two walls of bookcases and a closet. A half bathroom is next to it.

This post-and-pier house is on the south side of the island of Kauai, about 12 miles southwest of Lihue Airport and the nearby Kukui Grove Shopping Center, where there is a Safeway and a Costco. It is six miles northwest of the popular Poipu Beach Park. The elevation makes for slightly cooler temperatures and more rain than at lower altitudes near the coast — to the extent that no irrigation system is required to maintain the property’s lush plantings.
