$1.6 Million Homes in New Jersey, California and Hawaii

This Northside Summit home is less than 10 minutes on foot from the center of the city (village green, train station with direct service to Pennsylvania Station) and a block from Lincoln-Hubbard Elementary School. The high school is less than a mile away.

Size: 3,713 square feet

Price per square foot: $431

Indoors: The owners bought the house in 2007 from the estate of a woman who lived there from 1938 until her death and was married to the son of the founders of the Reeves-Reed Arboretum, the reputed source of many plantings on the property. (The dogwood tree in back is believed to be the oldest in town.) Beginning in 2011, the property was thoroughly renovated (plaster walls were repaired, cracked panes of leaded glass were replaced) and a new kitchen was added, along with a mudroom and wraparound porch.

Dark chestnut millwork, diamond panes and leaded transoms topping bay windows are among the historic features, as are a coffered ceiling in the foyer and a decorative plaster ceiling in the living room. The home has five fireplaces (the living room’s is the only one currently usable), and decorative borders are inlaid in some of the hardwood floors. The family room off the living room is six-sided.

The formal dining room leads through a butler’s pantry with a wine refrigerator and ice-maker into the new eat-in kitchen, which has honed granite countertops, a marble-topped island and schoolhouse pendant lights. The new mudroom includes a wall of enclosed storage space and a stacked washer and dryer — one of two laundry areas in the home. (The other is on the third floor.)

Up the opulent staircase with its branching spindles are three second-floor bedrooms and two bathrooms. The master suite has a fireplace, new marble bathroom and attached 15.5-foot-square sitting room. Three additional bedrooms and a bathroom are on the third floor, along with a storage room off the laundry room.

The house also has a full unfinished basement, portions of which are used as an exercise room and a workshop. There is also a half bathroom and a sauna.

Outdoor space: The new covered porch leads to a bluestone backyard patio. There is also a fire pit and a three-story carriage house with room for two cars on the first level. The owners built an external staircase to the top two floors and installed gas lines, electricity, plumbing, computer cabling and new windows, but the walls still need to be finished. When they bought the house they were told to be on the lookout for buried treasure, because the mother of a previous owner had lost her engagement ring in the backyard. It never turned up. The lot is 0.34 acres.

Taxes: $22,647 (2018)

Owned by the screenwriter, memoirist and actor Jerry Stahl (“Bad Boys II,” “Permanent Midnight”), this home is in the Mount Washington neighborhood, about seven miles northeast of downtown. Moon Canyon’s hiking trails and the black walnut woodlands of Heidelberg Park are less than a mile away. Red-tailed hawks can be seen swooping below the deck.

Size: 2,987 square feet

Price per square foot: $535

Indoors: The top-down configuration includes wide stairs that descend from the main entrance at the garage level to a floor with an open-plan living, dining and kitchen area on one side and a library on the other. The great room has two walls of windows and a fireplace with a cylindrical metal chimney flanked by wood cabinets.

The kitchen was recently updated with white cabinets, stainless-steel appliances and a butcher block island. The library has two walls of bookcases and a closet. A half bathroom is next to it.

The staircase continues downward to a level with the master suite and two guest rooms that share a second full bathroom. The black-tiled master bathroom has a separate walk-in shower and tub, and the sink top extends to a seated vanity area. There is also a bonus room that has a separate entrance from the outside and is not counted in the square footage.

Outdoor space: The deck is accessible from the great room, and there is a private balcony off the master. The two-car garage opens directly into the house. The lot is 0.1 acres.

Taxes: $19,988 (estimated, based on 1.25 percent of the listing price)

This post-and-pier house is on the south side of the island of Kauai, about 12 miles southwest of Lihue Airport and the nearby Kukui Grove Shopping Center, where there is a Safeway and a Costco. It is six miles northwest of the popular Poipu Beach Park. The elevation makes for slightly cooler temperatures and more rain than at lower altitudes near the coast — to the extent that no irrigation system is required to maintain the property’s lush plantings.

Size: 2,481 square feet

Price per square foot: $639

Indoors: The central public room of the single-level house has a vaulted, open-beamed wood ceiling with skylights and solid ipe flooring. On one side of the great room is a wing with two guest bedrooms with en suite bathrooms. The other side holds a kitchen with granite-top, mahogany-colored cabinets, stainless-steel appliances and aqua subway tile. Through a portal framed in elaborately carved wood is a master suite with a bathroom that has a tub embedded in a stone base and a walk-in lava-rock shower.

Outdoor space: About 1,000 square feet of deck space wraps around much of the building and can be reached directly from the great room and master bedroom. Stairs descend to the 2.25-acre property, planted with pineapples, lychee, avocados, dragon fruit, mangoes and bananas. A dozen photovoltaic panels on the roof produce electricity that can be sold back to the Kauai Island Utility Cooperative.

Taxes: $9,004
